I can not get close ups with this camera. Any advice? Should I shoot on the highest resolution and then figure a way to zoom with computer software?
I used the "flower" setting for close ups but it is still pitiful. Can I add a lens?
Attached is as close as I can get in focus.

That still doesn't get it very well. I would love to get just 3 or 4 polyps in a frame. What software can zoom that for me. I use Infranview but it doesn't have that function. I am surfing on it right now.

i'm not really a camera guy, but megapixels basically just refers to the size of the pictures. so an 8.1 megapixal shot should give you a huge image. just crop what you want out of it in microsoft paint or something.

I'm sorry that I don't have any camera advice for you, but I did want to comment on what a beautiful picture you were able to get not as "close up" as you may have wanted!~

You are doing it right, take a picture at the highest resolution with the in the macro mode, or as you so eloquantly put it, the flower button. Then you need to take whatever software you have and "crop" the part of the picture that you want. What this does is cut out the part of the picture that you want and discards the rest. Save this picture as a different file name. Make the picture size as big as you can so that it still looks good.

That is what I did here when I was trying to get and ID on this. The first picture is the original, the second is the cropped and resized picture.
