closed loop in sump

I was thinking of upgrading my return pump(mag 18) to a larger pump(Sequence reeflo dart) but my overflow will not handle it. would it be worth it to split the line run valves and on the closed loop that goes back to the sump add another filter sock or other type prefilter. I want the bigger pump because it makes less noise and uses less power. Is this a good idea or a waste of money?

You could always put a valve on the output of the pump to throttle the amount of water that returns to the tank.
Closed loops are closed systems that are not tied to sumps or overflows. You mention that in your post but it does not sound like you have one.

The dart pump is rated at 2800 GPH w/4' head pressure. My overflow is 1400 GPH. That seems like a waste to use a valve and close the return way down, any other suggestions.
