cloudy water...

my water has been cloudy now for the past three days. all i did was move a piece of l/r and stirred up a little bit of cc. my tank is in mid cycle. usually my filter clears the water very efficently and quickly and never takes this long to clear. can the cloudiness be from the tank going through its cycle, (amm. going down (.25), trites are up, trates are buliding)? is the l/r giving off sludge? what will take care of this problem? will a skimmer help this? additives? help is appreciated....ty!

During the cycle it not advised to add any addatives,or run a skimmer.Have you cleaned your filter material latly??? If not this could be the cause of the cloud not clearing. You should rince it out with saltwater, not fresh.Freshwater will kill any bacteria living in the filter...If this does not cure the cloud, try getting some polishing/micron filter material for your filter. This will remove smaller particals of waste from the water.

are you supposed to clean the filter medium during the cycling process??? this is the only reason i have not cleaned it. how would you clean the medium in sw? do you clean it in the tank or in a basin of seperate sw? if seperate should it be the same sg as inside the tank? i have read to clean the medium (sponges) in the tank is this true? Also, does the l/r have anything to do with the cloudiness?

ding...ding.... yes i rinsed my cc before putting it in. like i said all i did was move a piece of l/r (turned it right side up) because it had some coraline growing on the bottom side of it and then i brushed some cc up to it to fill in the gaps. thats all i did. thats why i asked if the l/r has anything to do with the cloudiness.
