clove polyps staying retracted

I have some clove polyps, gsp, and some button polyps and my cloves are having some die off also. My perameters are good but I have this grey matter and it builds up in my tank. It will cover the rock my cloves grow on and the longer i wait to baste it off the more secure it gets but they were thriving until I got this grey stuff in my tank, and I dont think its algae I have a pretty good clean up crew and they will not touch it so it may be toxic? If anyone has wisdom on this topic I would be very greatfull...

Clove polyps can get tempermental to any changes in the tank.
Can you post your parameters and lets us know a little about your tank.
Can you post a pic of this gray matter?

Phosphates might be high.. +1 water parameters
