My mother-in-law wrote me and had heard on the tv that clown fish can change there sexes back and forth? I s that true. I have done a lot of reading on clowns and I have never heard of that? My clown has been digging out sand underneath a peice of live rock, he/she also put sand in its mouth and spits it out. Would that be a nest? He is by himself.

I don't know what one fish alone would be. But when you get two juveniles together they start out as either males or neutral. Then the larger one will turn into a female and the smaller one is the male.

that is kind of neat. I had tried to add another clown and the larger one tried to kill the other. so he is seperated in a tank of his own. I was able to catch im because he was holding on to the other it was awful. I had never had that happen. So now I don't know what the one I have is. I just think his personality is the greatest, girl or boy!!! Thanks for the info.

If you have just one clown, it will eventually become female. If you add two, the strongetr will become a female and the weaker a male. If there are three or higher in a tank, the strongest will be a female, the second-strongest a male, and everyone else will be sexually inactive males. I love clowns......

Just to expand on that quote a little; if the female dies then one of the stronger males will become female to take the dead ones place.

not all fish do, some wrasses do though. BTW they do not change back and forth, once they are female they stay female

i have 2 tomato clowns and they started off small and then one got real big and became the female when the other one stayed small. then the female started kicking sand with its tail and started nesting and then the mated and layed eggs. but they never hatched becuse my puffer kept eating them they lay eggs qutie often.
