mine has learned not to bite the hand that feeds it...you bite me, I don't feed you.
now the big ol damsels...anytime I tried to put my hand in the tank he'd bite me (he went without dinner a few nights..lol). didn't hurt, scared me the first time though.

Ask Ryebread if they hurt. His took a nice chunk out of his finger. He has a pic of it somewhere.

Whoa. Out of all the fish I am thinking about keeping, I would have thought that they would NOT be ones to bite. But, I've never had clowns, so at least I am not prepared if mine try to bite me after I have them in the tank!

Ok, lets not get too carried away. They are still JUST clownfish. Yes, Ryebread had one take a bit of skin off, but that was almost a freak occurance. Clownfish are, as far as I'm concerned, very clueless. That's part of what makes them so lovable. However, it means they don't have the sense not to bite the hand that feeds. Just trying to protect their territory. I've been bitten by my clowns many times, admittedly they aren't huge clowns, but it really isn't a big deal, just a little annoying (or cute, if I'm in the playful mood). Of all the things to be scared of in a tank, getting bit by a clownfish should be pretty darn low on the list of fears. See the thread, "things that hurt in aquaruims!!!!!!" in this forum for a better list of things to worry about. Sorry for the soapbox, I love those little guys, had to stick up for them.

What have you heard about maroon bites? Does it break the skin, or just startles you? I bought a BIG FAT Gold stripe Maroon a few months ago, and she has been fantastic, no aggression with my hand or the other fish. She will even accept flakes from my fingers.
Wish I had a digital camera to show her off. She's one of my favorites?

He's right. She is gorgeous! And personable.
BTW man, when I get back to town, I'm going to borrow a digital cam and take some shots of my tank. We can take some of yours then also if you want.

i heard the clown that bit Rye was a tomato clown, one of the more aggressive species of clownfish next to Maroons.

What's all this I hear about clowns biting??:D
It is true that they have teeth and although they normally just nip at you, I had an unusual experience with a very large true perc........aka the Devil Clown. Meanest fish in my tank.....I had to sell him to someone with a semi-aggressive reef a while back.

And here is a photo of the devil clown herself!
At nearly over three inches, it was the largest percula clown that I have ever seen.

I currently have a False Percula clown in the tank that will grab ahold of my finger and shake it back and fourth like a little dog. It seems to me that if you a mated pair of clowns, the Mama is usually the mean one.

call it mean, but if a clown bit me next thing he knew he would be dining the barracuda! (or my uncles lionfish)
Kind of cruel and unneccessary dont you think?
Its a fish' natural instinct to protect itself. You also want to raise a pacu until large enough to provide ample portions of meat, then filet it? Just order it online. Do you hit innocent dogs while driving in the street?

will defend myself against a mean ole clownfish! or any other kind of animal!
A mean ole clown fish eh? thats cool because clownfish arent at all way smaller than you. So i guess if you annoyed some one on this board enough, then they could like defend themselve against you by kicking you off? You are a moron...HTH :D
