clownfish: change in personality

My clownfish has become much less active than he used to be... this has been gradual over the last 6 months or so. I don't see any signs of disease and the tank parameters are the same as they always have been (I track it frequently).
When I bought him as a baby (about 2.5 years ago), he would spend all day swimming against the flow of my powerhead or otherwise cuddling with my bubble-tip anemone. He was an extremely active little fish for two years. Over the past 6 months, he has been spending more and more time curled into his favorite cave -- nearly all day as far as I can tell. He comes out to greet me and swims rapidly when he thinks I will be feeding him, but otherwise just hides.
Here are my extremely vague questions: is this kind of behavior shift normal? Do clownfish grow old and lazy? This is my first clownfish and am curious if you guys have any comments on your own experience.
Thanks!
Julie
P.S. The only extra point of relevance is that he no longer has any tankmates (besides his anemone, some snails, a hermit crab, and soft corals). Would he be more active if I bought him a new cleaner shrimp or fish friend?

I would think he needs a little more entertainment... ever think of getting him a mate or 1 other fish?
