Clownfish question

i have a question on clownfish.
My gf just asked me "Why do they call them clownfish?"
and i was like ahh well they call them clownfish because ummmm hmmm well because umm... i dont know.
And now im curious. Why do they call them clownfish?

I don't have the answer to your question, but everytime my bf sees a clownfish in a tank he always says "You're a clownfish--do something funny!" And they never do. So I have no idea of why they're called a clownfish.

I heard it was because they swim kindof funny, but I don't know if that is true. Mine swim funny when I turn the lights off or when they wake up in the moring they twist a lot but then they snap out of it. So I may have just made up that answer but that's what I heard. ***)

my guess/ assumption would be because of the patterns of their colouring. big and bold just like a clown

I have heard that and they way they act in the anemone in the wild they look like clowns darting in and out of the anmeone.
