In a 55 gallon tank would it be better to have a pair of tomatoes with a pair of maroons.
A pair of maroons with a tomato. A maroon with a pair of tomatoes. Or one maroon and one tomato.

None of the above. Different clown species are UNLIKELY to get along. Your safest bet is getting one pair of a single species.
Why are you so fixated on getting more than one species???

I agree with Dane. They will most likely not get along. Those clowns are territorial and will defend their area and chase the others away. If you have a big tank like 100+ gallons that might be a different story. If you decide to mix the two species together, do it at the same time.

you just got two no how to intreduse them.
I have a 55 and have a perc and a tomato clown.
but tomatoes would be more likly to get a long
maroons tend to be more agresive
if you get to put them in at the same time so they get time to make their own territories
Ive even seen to tomatoes put in at the same time bond with tho same anenome and be together fine.
