I am looking for advice on getting a second clown in my nano reef. I have had one clown in the tank for approx. 3 months by himself. his only other inhabitants are corals, a peppermint shimp, cucumbers, snails, and hermits. I have been considering a second clown but i do not want them to be fighting with each other.

What type of clown do you have. Adding another clown will probably cause a fight, but if you get a very small clown, one that will not pose a threat to the already existing clown you have, it might be ok.

i have a false percula. i will not put another fish in if they are doomed to fight. maybe i should look into getting another shrimp or something.

you can add another clown, just make sure that its the same type and much smaller.
if the one already in the tank is larger than the new one, she will establish dominace in the tank, the new one will be the male in the relationship. hth

They will fight at the beginning, but then they will get used to each other and realize that both will have the ample amount of food. They will then start to swim together and get along fine...

I am hoping that when i put another one in they can get along. Is there any way to tell the --- of a clown fish?

They are all female. When they first fight for dominance that is what they are doing, they are deciding who has to change their gender to male. Thats why it would be smart to get a small one to add to the other one, it won't have a choice but to become the male and there will be less of a fight.

Actually they are all non---- specific and the dominant one will morph into a female and the next dominant one will become a male and any remaining ones will be a juvenile ....
You might also help the process along by re-arranging your rock work ....
