do i need a fuge to raise cocepods? i REALLY want a mandarin. i have been noticing a few in my tank now and then.
thanks for the help

Youll need like the double numbers from your tank to rocks for example 55 gallon might need 100 pounds im just giving an example of how much rock you might need. And a fuge would help

You dont need a refug to raise pods. A refugium give the pods a safe place to propagate, and replenish the numbers. If you dont have this its possible the mandrine will wipe out all your pods then starve. My orchid dottieback wiped out all the pods, bristleworms, side shrimp, anything he could eat is gone in a tank with no fuge. What size tank is it? If its big enough you shouldn't have to worry, say 100g or more. If not......

I did some research on this too. I want one. I have a 125G. I was told a variety of things. One was I would be okay with the size of my tank. The other make sure it is a mature tank. Mine is only 5 months old. One more comment was to buy the copepods and put them in but that could get expensive. Let me know how it goes. I think I am going to wait. I only have 90lbs of LR and need a bit more. I figure this summer I will add the guy and make sure I have some copepods just in case he looks hungry. I have a 6 line wrasse so he will probably eat the copepods if not fed well. You don't want competition for the copepods. Another thing I learned was the refugium. I don't know much about that at this point. Still learning...

Beautiful creature but very hard to keep. I would suggest you do some google searching and see some of the hardships and successes people have had and determine from there if you might like to try your hand at keeping a dragonet.

50 gallon, 40lbs lr, only 2.5 months old. I bought not one but two mandarins (spotted and green) after 1 month of starting my tank. Well the green died within 4 days, he would not eat a thing. The spotted is doing great (1.5 months now), he eats almost everything (mysis, brine, cyclops). Ill feed the tank 1 cube of mysis or brine per day. Every other day ill drop one cube of cyclops in the tank for the mandarin. He will spend all his time going through the rocks picking up the cyclops.
Everyone will say they need a very well established tank and even then hits hit or miss whether they will eat anything but copepods. Luckily mine does, His belly gets nice and fat

That is not the norm. But it is the exception. You got lucky. Cheers!

I have a 55 gallon with +70 lbs LR in tank fuge with cheato and I have a bigger problem keeping the front glass clear of pods than algae

It also helped that I bought a mandarin that was eating frozen food from my LFS so he eats like a pig
