Ammonia level is at 1.0 ppm Help! I bought a few fishes from a guy I met at the fish store and he gave me some of is salt water from his own tank. I bought a 20 gallon tank and placed the fish in there. What should i do with the ammonia level? some of the fishes color is fading.
Definitely need more info....did you just buy and set up the 20 gallon?? Have you had it for some time?? What kind of equipment do you have?? For us to help you, you have to help us understand your situation.
I'm pretty sure he's saying he put some fish into a new, uncycled 20g tank.
Wouldn't even know where to start with the help/suggestions. You're starting from ground-zero.
I am in the process of setting up a 90 gal tank.. I ran into a guy at my lfs and he was breaking down his tank..... So he sold me all of his fish about 15 of them.... I brought 15 gal of his water to use for a 20 gal quarantine tank so I could house them until the 90 gal was up and running.... I used his bioballs along with carbon and biomax in a filstar xp3 canister filter. the temp is about 78-80 degrees... there is nothing else in the tank but a piece of live rock that came straight out of his tank. He fed them marine diet pellet food only. Today I got the bright idea of getting them frozen mysis shrimp and some formula two for the herbivores... I definitly overfed them that I know... I gave them two cubes of the mysis shrimp and one of the formula two..... couple of hours later the water was yellow and smelled funny... The niger triger went from his normal black color to a light gray... all of the other fish lost some coloring too... I just did a 50% water change and the ammonia level dropped down to .5 is there anything else I can do too lower it? I am using ro water also.... HELP!!!!
Do a 40% water change but make sure that the temp and salinity level is the same. That should bring it down quite a bit. In the morning check the levels and do it again if needed. That is what I had to do with my tank to keep the levels down. Also add some ammonia detox in there
46g 2 clown, 1 coral beauty, 2 damsels
I messed with my sand and it caused the ammonia to go up. Keep an eye on your nitrates or nitrites too because those will probably be affected. Your either going through a mini cycle (crash) or you just need some clean water in there.
what can I do to lower my nitrites and nitrates? On initial setup my nitrates where high to begin with at 80 ppm.... I guess thats the way the guy had his tank setup.... He had the tank for three years... it was a 125g tank.....
15 fish in a 20 gal tank. I see nothing but problems here. You got about 13 fish too many. Better hope the 90 cycles fast and keep alot of water mixed for water changes. What kind of fish did you get and what size are they???
Changing a large amount of water is going to help in every way. You might be surprised. Changing a good portion of that water out without stressing the fish out might solve the problem.
Was that rock of filter media out of water for a period of time?
I would actually only feed your fish every 3 days and only enough to keep them alive until your large tank cycles

I hear ya on the fish.... I got them on the cheap side thats the only reason I jumped on them..... I have a niger trigger 4", a yellow tang 4", two domino damsels 1", 2 blue damsels 1",orange damsel 1", two gobies 3", dragnet 1.5", 5 damsels 1",
WOW yea thats over kill. Like I said feed them to keep them alive and keep doing those water changes and hopefully that is just your problem and nothing else.
How long do you think it will take to cycle your larger tank
My other problem is that my RO filter is slowwww as molases.... It makes 24 gal of water a day..... and out of the 30 gals of water I had made for the 90 gal tank I only have about 15 gal left..... Looks like I either fill the 90 gal tank with tap water and condition it or I bite the bullet and buy 80 gals of ro water from the store.... decisions.. decisions....
Personally I would use that 15 for your fish tank now and get that ammonia down and if you can buy the RO water but if not, is there a glacier machine near by to fill your own jugs? If that still is not going to work then your just going to have to use tap.

I have no idea how long it will take to cycle my tank.... assuming I get water in there tommorrow and get the wet/dry up and running by tuesday night how long do you think it will take? Im not sure how to even begin cycling it Im a newb...... should I throw a couple of the damsels in there?
NO damsels- get 4 or 5 raw deli shrimp and put them in a nylon sack- in about 3 or 4 days they will start to decay and start your cycle. Make sure you have test kits to keep track or the cycle so you know when and how it's going.
Putting damsels in is cruel, the ammonia and nitrites will burn their gills.
