a guy who's into saltwater fish and tanks told me that I should get a cold sterile filter rather than a RO filter unit because its better for saltwater tanks. What are your opinions on this. thanks.

Sounds like your buddy is into making beer or wine, in addition to keeping saltwater tanks.
There's info on the web about cold sterile water filtration, although I'm not familiar with the process.
