I'm going to apologize in advance if this is something really stupid on my part. I'm VERY new to the fish hobby! Is there any problems or should there be any with turning off my light on the tank over night?....I did so last night over night, i woke up this morning and all my fish were very sickly looking, my mandarin goby had turned completely white, and everyone looked AWFUL. i felt the water and it was extremely cold....i turned the heat up and the light back on obviously and once the water heated up they seem fine....no one looks sick or anything, just very happy....what do i do now? and did i do something terrible to my fishes???

First of all, in a NEW tank, you should not have a mandarin Goby.
Get a heater for the tank. I'm not sure what size tank you have, but accordingly get a heater. Set it in a way that at night it reache's the desired temp with the light's off. It takes a few hrs to set the heater and make the temp reach the right temp.
Could you pls state your tank? AS in size, fish etc

How many W heater do you have ? Chance's are its not functioning well if the water get's cold.
And yes, as stated, too many fish. Plus many people usually have fan's blowing over the water since the lights can heat it up. has your tank been up in the summer ?You faced a problem of over heating ?
I"m assuming you have a temp gauge ;) ( I know, too stupid :D )

Go get a new heater. Sounds to me like your heater might be on it's way out. They are only like $20

What kind of lights do you have? If they are power compacts they should not make much of a difference in the water temp.
Also you should not have your lights on all day anyways. Only about 10 hours or so.
Also welcome to the board. This is a great place to learn, ask questions and get information. As I have learned people on here are not trying to put you down for all the fish you have in your tank or what you have in your tank. They are just trying to tell you what is good for the fish so you dont have further problems buecause we have all found out the our lfs does not care what they sell you they just want to make money. :D We are all here to help each other. :D
Good Luck

Mandarins can look happy for a while, but will not survive in that set up. You need 110lbs of live rock. Also in nature they slep for 21 hours a day, and feed for three, and repeat. With that many critters in your tank I doubt that it could find a place to get even 3hrs of rest. IF you do not lose some of those fish your will probably have a bad outbreak of ich.

Yep, your heater is not doing its job. Replace it with a Ebo-Jager or a Titanium. The heater will have an internal thermostat that should kick on as needed, and obviously keep the water temp maintained at night when the lights are off and the house temp is low. Be sure to have a large enough one for your tank size, but that shouldn't be very big for a small tank like yours. I have a 125 gallon tank and have a 17", 250 watt Ebo.
Remember, small tanks will change water quality and temp much, much faster than a larger tank. They are quite prone to instability.
You should aim for 1 inch of fish (go by their size at maturity) for every five gallons of tank water. More than that will eventually stress out your fish and give you disease and water quality problems. In other words big headaches and loss for you.
Many people have lamented the loss of a mandarin here and that is why you hear all of the warnings. It can take over a year for them to slowly starve and waste away. The general rule of thumb is 100+ pounds of live rock per mandarin to sustain them. They forage for microfauna (pods) in the tanks live rock for their main source of sustainence. Please consider this and consider the ethics/ motivations of the fish store that sold it to you. They are a very beautiful, challenging fish, and deserve a nice life.
Please continue to visit the board often and ask for advice and help when you need it. It is a thousand times more valuable than anything that you local fish store can provide. Get to know the forum search function here. You can look up previous threads and find some great info. Try a search on 'mandarin' for example.
I recommend purchasing the book 'The Consientious Marine Aquarist'. It will be an invaluable reference and is good reading. It is some of the best $$ I have spent in this hobby.
Good Luck,
-Christine
