Colt Coral "melting"

I have a number of corals in my tank and never had a problem with any of them. I bought a colt about 5 weeks ago and it appears to be melting.
I tested the water Sunday:
Ammonia 0
PH 8.3
Cal 400
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 15-Planning 10% water change in the next few days (it's unusually high)
Alk was normal, maybe a bit low (can't remember exactly)
Lights are on about 6 hrs per day. The Colt is not in any direct waterflow and sits in the bottom of the tank, between 2 piles of LR (fairly wide). Can the "melting" be stopped or do I need to remove it. Not sure if it's harmful.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Its normal for them to close, shrivle and shrink. Then later open back up. But ' melt ' is not good.
vtfishies is right about what they need and if you can provide that then may not be too late.

I have had the "melting" with a new colt before, after a week or two. I had to cut it down to a two inch stump to finally stop the necrosis. It had taken a long time after that to rebound, but it did. IME

I used scissors to cut the affected arms off and ended up cutting the whole head off with a razor blade because I couldn't stop it from spreading to the other arms. I took this extreme measure because I thought I would end up losing it either way. The base turned what I would call a purplish color after that and about 3 weeks later it started developing new buds/arms. It's a very slow recovery process... To make sure we are talking about the same look "melting" It was necrosis - flesh dieing and was dissolving off or of the arms and floating from it.

Did you get that colt at green tree? I am not sure what part of ky you are in. I bought a nise size one from greentree and it melted away tried fraging a good peace off but it died as well I have never had any luck with colt corals.

No, bought it in Etown. I've had it for about a 6 weeks now....the deterioration seems to have slowed. It's mainly a branch on the side. The hose to the pump got lose ysterday and water gushed everywhere. I ended up causing a major storm in the tank until I fixed the connection....ammonia was at .50 this morning so ended up doing a 2nd waterchange this weekend....I'm sure that's not helping!!!
