IO, I hate comcast, its always failed to record shows, raised costs on us for no reason, and all the channels from discovery are all over the freaken place. Direct TV IO is easier to use and is better more orginized.

Depends. If you have a lot of TV's in the house cable is a better deal. I've had DirectTV and had no issue with the service. I have Comcast now because I won't deal with our phone company (Qwest) anymore because of their incompetent billing department so getting everything through the cable co make more sense.

I really liked Dish Network too. But AT&T's Uverse has been ok so far. They've had their problems however. But still not as bad as my comcast service.

Some of my thoughts:
Satellite:
Cheaper unless you have a lot of rooms and need multiple receiver boxes
Signal can get fuzzy in heavy rain
No local channels (may not be a problem any longer)
First time customers can usually get a sweet 12 month deal
Is internet available?
More HD channels available
DVR available?
Cable:
Expensive if you need all the channels like me
Internet is fast but expensive
Less HD channels but you can go with an HD antenna with no problem
No need for multiple receiver boxes unless you need digital channels or DVR
Can go with other DVR boxes like Tivo (I bought the lifetime subscription)

Sat guys don't have the problem with local channels anymore.

My wife works for our local cable company, Cablevision, so we get free TV and Internet. Have to pay for the phone service through them. If we had to pay for it though we would definitely have satellite.

We have Time Warner Cable along with their RoadRunner Internet. Expensive, but very reliable. Their customer service and tech support is first rate, at least around here.
I've learned to, once a year or so, call and ask what their internet service would cost if I changed to Direct TV. They get all upset and give me a promotional 6 month deal so I can have more time to 'think about it'

Dish Network...HD free for life!!
and their pricing is better than the others...I get more channels as well. Since my Cowboys have every game aired on TV I don't need sunday ticket...

I really like comcast with internet, phone and cable. You do need to keep them in line though. There is a phone option here when you call them that is "thinking about changing dial ...." I do it each time (every year) they try to raise my rates and get a better deal.

I just called my cable company looking for a deal and threatened to disconnect my internet service. They were able to lower my bill by $38 a month if I committied to a one year contract. If I leave them early, I have to pay a $35 early cancellation fee.

Comcast just added a bunch more HD channels now. I gotta keep that thinking about changing deal in mind for when they try to jack my rates but I am locked in on this price for 2 years so all is good. Being able to go online to check phone messages is pretty cool too. Internet is about the same quality as what the phone co offers here.

I like the comcast "Guide" better. You can get some info about the program or movie you're watching to see if you want to watch. I'm pretty much an at the moment surfer, not a regular tv show watcher, so I like that.
Also, why do you have to have land line for D TV? That would nail it for me. I refuse to pay for a cell and a land line; with all the added taxes on land lines in addition to non-stop spamming problems means I will never own a land phone, or get anything that requires it.

Cable and Satellite operate a little differently. Cable is basically a fixed 2-way radio. They constantly communicate back and forth. If they wanted to, the Cable Company knows exactly what your watching, what parts you rewind over and over, etc. As where Satellite is fixed signals back and forth. In theory, I could take my out of region DVR, to a differnt region where a football game was blocked out, and watch it there, without DirecTV knowing.
The DirecTV DVR's have a built-in modem and uses the phoneline to communicate. You really only need if you order PPV stuff by remote. I would be willing to bet most people don't have their DVR's hooked up to the phone. The installers don't even bother anymore.

I have comcast. I love it. My bill stays around $150 which im used to paying. I have two HD boxes with damn near every channel. Plus their internet and phone. I have the sports package and HBO for all their cool shows like entourage and hard knocks plus all the other crazy mini shows they do. My cable has been out 1 time in the past 2 years and it has never not recoreded a show I asked it too.

I hope you didn't pay them. I would have just told them "how about I just don't pay the bill this month and we'll settle up next month when you have your billing straightened out"
