Hey all, just was wondering what sg was. It says specified gravity or whatever in the acronems sticky, but what is that?
Just a noob question.
Thanx, by the way, i am getting my lr this weekend and gunna strat my cycle soon.
You all have helped me so much over the past 2 months and just wanted to say thanx.
If you have any opinions to my deleo let me know.
This was a post in a previous thread that i strated and will paste in in here for any ather advise that you all would lie to add.
Ok all,
You all might see me postin threads like every day askin 9000 questions, but i am finnaly ready to start.
I will have a FOWLR tank with 2 true perc clowns.
Later Down the road I will add batter lighting, and move into some anemonies and get a cleanup crew when ready.
If any one is not familiar with my situation it is as follows and up to date.
I have:
50 gallon glass tank. W/ 40watt light hood, canopy, and stand.
4 Zoo Med 228's (3 in teh tank and 1 spare)
1 CPR Back Pak 2 Hang on filter, and protein skimmer
40 lbs Tropical Play Sand
160 Gallon Instant Ocean salt mix
Pro Quatics Water Conditioner
Water test kit
Hydrometer
Heater (With a digital desplay)
2 33 gallon buckets
Hydrometer
Also bought The Concientious Marine Aquarist by Fenner
When ever I need it i have 15lbs fully cured fiji lr at my disposal
Ok, so I am ready to start.
This is what I have done:
Read for like 3 weeks straight, non stop fish aholic!
Set up stand in my desired position.
Deap cleaned my tank with WATER.
Positioned my tank on my stand.
Assempled the Bak PAk and attatched it
Assembled the Zoo Meds and attatched them
Attached the heater
Learned how to use everything
So whats next?
This is what I think i should do ......
1.Position all the equipment in the tank properly.
2.Pour tap water into the 2 buckets and add conditioner.
3.Put in water conditioner.
4.Put in the salt mixture.
5.Test salinity with hydrometer.
6.Place the LR in the tank.
7.Put Sand into the tank.
8.Lay a plastic bag over the lr and sand.(this will prevent the sand from stirring up so much.
9.Pour the water into the tank.
10.Test water peramiters
11.Power on everything and make sure it all opperates.
12.Wait
ok what am i doing wrong?
am i doing everything right?
what do i need to do better/different?
are my steps in the proper order?
am i on theright track?

Congrats on getting everything rolling. I am at about the same place you are in your setup. SG is Specific Gravity. From Webster.com:
the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of some substance (as pure water) taken as a standard when both densities are obtained by weighing in air
Think of it in terms of a ship. The more salt that is in water the higher the SG. The higher the SG the easier it is for the ship to float. Correct me if I am wrong anyone...
