here is a dumb question! ive had my tank set up for 5 years now, when i started ,it was with the help of a friend in the business. what exzctely is cycling?(i know sounds dumb huh). im sure i must have did it when i sstarted my tank, but know it as something else. in the beginning, i lost a few fish ( nothing major) but everything has been fine since. ps: cover your mouth when u laugh so i wont hear !!!!! 55 gal tank

no question is dumb. do a search or read a few post, this question is answered many times.

Yes your tank did go through it when you started, even though you did not see it except through the loss a few fish. Essentially the cycle is the initial buildup and eventual breakdown of ammonia--by keeping track by testing people will know exactly when their tank is safe to start stocking without losing any fish. Theoretically anyway.
