Concrete aquarium

I would like to know if any of you know how to make a concrete aquarium in a wall (about 400 gallon). I've read about a mix called thorite that is used in public aquariums, but nothing more about it.

I live in Spain, and here, for that kind of aquarium the cost is about 2.100 $. The other day i remembered a web page i saw time ago of an aquarium in a basement (3500 gallons) that was made of concrete. The other thing i like of it is the "rocky" look of the walls, not like glass, i want a window to the ocean! <img src="graemlins//freak.gif" border="0" alt="[freak]" />

You could build a tank of that size out of plywood and fiberglass for reinforcement. If your doing it yourself, it may be far easier and cheaper than cement. Just my .02

Maybe, but i'm not very confident in myself (sorry for my english) about working with plywood and fiberglass. Now i'm in the process of building the house, and i'm more "openminded" about concrete, but i'm still thinking in all possibilities. And that takes me to another question, does anyone know if fiberglass or epoxi are lifetimelasting?
I've been a long time away, but this forum is still the best.

Jeff, do the calculation off the dimentions shown. It's actually closer to 4500 gal when filled!

my question is: where does the money come from. Not just anyone can drop this kind of cash. I know that my 50 gallon keeps me on my toes with only being a student with a part time job. These guys with the 4000 whatever gallon must havew plenty of cash flow. The fish in there are worth enough. I dont know about the US but In canada a blue(hippo) tank is worth $90.

In Spain a hippo is about 25-30 $, a flavescens about the same, and the hard corals are about 30-40 $ depending the size. And i was complying about the prices here <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />
About the money, for most of us it's hard to buy all the stuff, but it's a matter of time, save money and patience. I had first a 30 gallon, now i own a 90 gallon, and i've bought all the equipment enough for a 250 gallon. It's a little bit more expensive, but if you're planning to upgrade you don't buy twice.

I believe Mr4000's tank is 4000 gallons. I have talked to him a coouple of times via email and he has extended me an invitation to visit him and see the tank. read about it. Its just incredible. I believe he is a finisher or a drywaller, something along those lines. He is not a wealthy man by any means and has told me that he doesn't get any discounts from anyone. Thats why he hasn't stocked the tank yet. I believe he told me that his electric bill ran about $300.00 a month just for the tank. That sounds about right. He is the first person I have met in this hobby who doesn't crave a bigger tank. At least not verbally yet.

pontiac, try calling the director of the London Zoo Aquarium. Their tanks used to be made by Sam Bray. He was the best tank manufacturer in England when I was there. Any big zoo like that will probably return your call if you leave a message.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying first with Madrid's Zoo, that is a little bit closer to me . Anyway, i have quite a clear idea about my next aquarium. By now, it's going to be made of concrete, well, bricks with a thick cement mortar, then a waterproof mortar, and epoxi paint, all with a rocky texture and 400 g (I don't really like the look of glass), only the front will be glass (it's in the middle of a library in a 8 m wall). It will be made in 2 or 3 months, so it could change the way it's made, ...

My dream is a 20,000 gal aquarium,,,,,but my 10,000 gal swimming pool is in the way. Has anyone ever converted a swimming pool to an aquarium????

My parents have a big pool that has a chlorine free filter system. When I was a kid my dad put about 10 big goldfish in the pool for us kids to chase around. The fish actualy lasted a couple months before he took them out for the winter.

every time i see one of those celebrity homes shows i drool when they show the indoor pool!!!! i would love to build one of those into a reef/fish and go scuba diving. i could just emagine sitting indian style at the bottom of a 12foot pool just watching the fish swim by............ ahhhh ps. could you imagine how much it would cost to just stock the thing. or just to buy a claning crew!!!!
