What is the diff. between a refugium and a sump filter, and how fast should the water be pumped through

A sump is basically just a place for the water to go under the tank, usually it houses the skimmer, heaters, and a return pump. some people (like me) have incorporated a refugium in thier sump but it is pllumbed seperately.
A refugium is a place to grow macro algae (to export nutrients) and house a place for pods to reproduce without being eaten. The water flow in a refugium is much slower than in a sump.
I turn my tank water over in the sump probably 10x an hour, and in my fuge it is more like 3-4x an hour.
