My camera is crappy but found this decent pic of my convict (also my cleaner shrimp, elegance and sun coral, and a few hermits, lol) while clearing out pics.
Hes a really cool fish, my second favorite behind my midas blenny.

I've had the convict for like 6 months now but hes still only like 2.5".
So sad about the elegance

It did awesome for a few months, eating, looking great, almost doubled in size. Then a few weeks ago starts wilting, stops eating. It wont eat anything at all, so bad now the last 3 days i've considered throwing it out but keep praying it recovers. Dont know what happened, everything was the same

The 1st pic was soon after i got it, the 2nd pic is a month or 2 after i got it,you can see it almost covers the rock behind it where in the 1st pic it barely touches it.
I'll take a pic and post how horrible it looks now tomorrow, so sad!

Dont feel bad, they are pretty and tempting but hardly no one can keep the alive for long. Suggestion....., dont get another one..
Tank looks sweet though.

Nice pic!
Yes, but mine is a convict blenny not an engineer goby
(i'm a blenny guy,lol)
They are an awesome fish, lots of personality but mine has gotten a little brazen. When i feed my sun, he comes out and i give him a squirt or 2 from the syringe. He actually grabs the tip and shakes it. The last few weeks hes started to go after my fingers if I dont give him enough :scared: Luckily, no teeth and he lets go pretty quick

LOL Emmitt, we're both wrong I think.
"This fish is an absolute delight. Pholidichthys leucotaenia, variously called the convict or engineer goby/blenny is neither a goby or a blenny, but still a very interesting aquarium specimen. "
thats from, The Conscientious Reef Aquarist

I bought mine biggish, about 8". Here's some more from that article, and yes it's a very very cool fish to have.
"Most folks have only seen this fish when it’s small, when it greatly resembles the common eel catfish, Plotosus lineatus in both appearance and behavior. Both are eel-shaped, social animals that “hang out” near rocky areas. The engineer goby is also overall blackish with a silvery white dorsal body line as juveniles… becoming more striped (convict suit-wise) with growth. And yes this fish can grow. Almost always in good health, and amongst the last to perish from disease, poor environment or catastrophe, Pholidichthys is never “late to the dinner table”… and can grow to more than eighteen inches in length… in your reef to fish-only system. "
heres another shot of mine

Very cool, and after reading that info I'm very tempted to buy a second and third one since they are social animals. A pair would be an amazing thing to have you if ask me.
I was in my tank yesturday morning fixing a knocked over rock and got a little spooked by my eng/convict fish... On my right hand I wear a gold bracelet and Godzilla(my fishes name) was circling my rist. Great personality on these fish once they get to know you. I highly recommend them to people with solid rockwork and sand substrate.

I wouldn't recomend buying another. As juveniles, they need to be in a group or will perish. When they get to be adults, they are not very sociable with others of their same kind.

I was told by a lfs owner who has 2 12" ones in the same tank that they are fine if they grow up together but may be aggressive towards a new convict.
p.s.- mine was bought as a juvenile(only 1") by himself and he has been fine without being in a group

Might be aggressive hmmm,
Hard to imagine him/her being aggressive but ok I'll make a note. I'll probably still give it a shot if I find one though, my LFS is very tolerant of bringing fish back.

I'd agree. It's hard for me to imagine my convict being aggressive with anything but my finger
He defers to every other fish in my tank(clown, hippo tang and midas blenny) during feeding and hides in one of his MANY holes hes dug under my LR if even my fire shrimpgoes near him. They seem very peaceful to me but maybe thats just ours :notsure:

I have one and its a hoot. he comes out when i pass the tank as if saying hey throw me a shrimp pellet or two. He also does not like the nass snails in his hole. he grabs them and spits them out the hole. He has been alone since it was small. I orig bought two, but one died within a few days of getting them. its between 8 and 10 inch long.
