From what I understand sponges can or do eat bacteria. this means that they pump alot of water through themselves to try to get enough.
I have read that they can eat some phytoplankon, however they only get a very small percentage of 5% of there total food by phyto. They can only eat phyto particles of about ~3-5 microns
So if someone were to tell you you need to dump all kinds of DT's or other phyto or plankton in your tank then it might not be doing your sponges a whole lot of good.
Like I said tough question and I'm not very sponge savy.
