Thanks, but I am not so sure. The LFS also had open brains and they were clearly different. More folds in the coral.
Anybody else?

That is no Scolymia, for sure. Trachyphyllia geoffroyi has many different forms and colors, that is what you have. Scolymia look completely different. I don't think I have a good pic of mine, I'll have to look.

I think you are right. I looked at the Brain - Red Open on this site and it looks very much like the coral above. So Trachyphyllia geoffroyi?

Here is a pic, not the best pic. The flesh is normally more pimply, and you don't have the extreme contrast between the mouth area and the outside lobe. Again, not trying to fight with you, but I'm pretty confident on this, I'm done, I guess more can chime in and see what they say.

In the middle, under the frogspawn, left of the candy canes.

Sorry, you posted while I was looking through pics. It still is an awesome looking brain, good luck with it. I'm sure it glows crazy under actinic, even better if you have some blue moonlights.

You guys are right. It is a cool coral and I will keep it. I am going back to the LFS to let them know that the ID is wrong.

Good luck at your LFS, maybe they can give you some credit or something if you overpaid a little
. I sure wish I could spend some dough right now.

I hear ya on the Christmas and Kids thing.
I paid the same as if I bought it on this site. $45. I did think I was getting a rarer coral, but this LFS is brand new and so I will just let the guy know. I will be dropping $$$ there for the forseeable future so I don't want to burn any bridges!

Rock on, sounds good. Not a bad price either, that is a nice brain. A Scolymia that size(it looks about 3 X 5 from the pic) would probably run close to $100 if not more, FYI.

There's another species of "open brain", trachyphyllia radiata, alternatively could it be that?

Yea, the Trachyphyllia radiata attaches to rock. This one clearly has the conical bottom that allow it to stay settled in the sand bad. Thanks!
