About 2 weeks ago i made a small shelter out
or chunks of coral for my reef tank. I am having a high nitrate problem rightnow and wondering if this had anything to do with it. I did a fifty percent water change today and that only seem to help a little. My nitrates are running at 30 right now, and my encrusting coral hasnt openen in 4 days iam not sure what i should do and need your help. thanks for any suggestions

When you did your water change did you syphon the LS or CC?
Moving all the rocks around could've brought up decayed matter causing the nirates to raise.
Do you see any waste laying on the bottom?
You may need to use the Nitrate rocks to add to your filter to help through this imidiate problem.
Hope this helps

I have a 40 gal w/20 lbs live rock with 1.5 to 2 inch sand bed. Filter system is bak-pak type. Fish clown, dwarf angel, scooter blenny, and algae blenny, serpent star and sea urchin. 4 corals and some mushrooms and a cleaner crew.

You need 5+" of LS to get good nitrate reduction, more LR will seed the LS faster also but is not necessary in the end game.

Once a week should be fine, it will take 4-6 weeks for the nitrates to start going away I believe.
