Hello, my name is ben and i have had my reef set up for about 9 months now. i currently have 66lbs of live rock in it but have had little to no success with the growth of the coraline algae. i understand that lighting is a big issue so this friday i'm purchasing a 48" aquastarlight future with 2 150w de hqi's. but my question is will this solve my problem or do i need to do something else. i'ld appreciate any comments.
once again thank you everyone <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

coraline algae dosent need alot of lights to grow. you do need to add calcium to your tank for it to start growing. keep your calcium levels at 450ppm. or close to that area.

it is also important to watch your ALk and PH levels as well. Make sure you have lots of flow- and point a powerhead right at one of your rocks with lots of coraline on it to help disperse it thru your tank. Lights will make a difference, some coraline alge needs higher, some lower wattage lights. If the coraline you have in your tank was used to higher wattage light, you may need to increase your lighting. are you hainvg problems with other algae?

I have found that coraline growth is increased with calcium levels of 400-450 ppm & alkalinity levels of 2.8 meg/l-3.5 meg/l.Those levels along with good circulation and a source of initial growth(quality LR) will produce coraline algaes in most lighting situations. I have tons of coraline in my reef but I've also got excellant growth in my fish only...and it has 2x15 watts of NO actinic & 1x40 watts of NO daylight. The reef has 4x65 10k PC's & 2x110 super actinic VHO's...both are 55 gal systems...the calcium & alkalinity are supplimented and stable in the reef...only monthly water changes in the fish only...go figure!!
