coraline algae.. so it's good.. but why?

I just can't leave well enough alone. I believe it that this red algae is good, now I just want to know why? Will my fish snack on it? Or does it help water conditions? etc?

It's a sure sign of a good healthy tank.It is also alot better looking than bare,ugly rocks...Your fish should leave it alone,but some crabs will eat it...
