Coraline Algae

Goniolithon, Amphirroa, Jania, Corallina, Neogoniolithon, Lithothamnion, Mesophylum, Tatanoderma, Peyssonelia, Porolithon, Sporolithon, Hydrolithon.
These are pink to dark red calcareous algae growing as a single crust or as overlapping layers.
Porlithon pachydermum in the Atlantic and P. onkodes in the Pacific are the most important reef-building red algae, producing much of the hard calcium cabonate (calcite) that cements the reef structure together and absorbs the shock of the waves, protecting the reef structure from destruction.
Live rock, both collected from the wild and cultured, should have abundant encrusting coralline algae surviving after weeks of darkness. The pink or red patches spread if provided supplementary calcium even in dim light. In the established minireef tank, encrusting coralline algae covers the glass, filters, and other hard parts, providing a solid base for attachment of anemones and corals. Without a calcium supplement, coralline grows poorly and may be overgrown by undesirable green hair algai and cyanobacteria.
