Coraline Algae.. ?!

I have some nice coraline algae growing on my live rock since I originally established my tank early this year. Now, there are spots of it on the back pane of glass in the tank, and it is also growing on the DSB. I usually use a turkey baster to clean the diatoms and coraline off of the DSB. Should I be doing this, or should I leave this algae on the DSB? The tank looks so much nicer when the DSB is nice and white, but I am not sure what is better for my inhabitants :) .. Any help would be appreciated. I am currently using Distilled water from Wal-Mart (the purple cap & label) as suggested as an alternative by some on here months ago. I am going to, however, start doing small water changes weekly with RO/DI water because since I have been using the distilled I have had an increase growth in diatoms.
Please let me know you comments and suggestions.

Are there any clean-up crews I could put in the tank to rid the DSB of coraline algae and diatoms? I have turbo snails and blue leg hermit crabs in there now. At first, the hermit crabs did great on the DSB, but now they all just hang around on the rock and never even venture onto the DSB.
