coraline algae is a type of algae that secretes a hard, calcium based shell around itself to compete with other algaes. it comes in many different colors, but the one most of us get to grow is purple. it is very eye-pleasing as well as beneficial.

I want this on my live rock as well.
What does a person have to do to insure it happens?

Try googling Coraline algae propogation. Interesting info.
I have a lot of coraline on my LR, but how it happened is totally beyond me, to be honest. I have never added a supplement or corrective chemical, so I can't vouch for the safety of any of the info. But I do believe if you can read between some lines about keeping phosphates low and calcium up, google those for natural enhancers...
When you go to purchase LR, be sure to look for fresh rock that shows some growth. It will seed.

Absolutely, when choosing rock--look for rock that has lumpy, bumpy areas. These areas are usually corraline that has either died or went dormant. It will come back with the proper calcium levels above 420, and alkalinity high(8-11 dKH), ph of 8.3, you should get more corraline than you want. I am a firm believer in water changes. Why buy supplements when you can change out water pretty quick (just plan ahead, and have it ready).
