Coralline Algae

I started my 60 gallon tank 8 weeks ago. I used 50 lbs of Macro dry rock and have about 3-4 inches of sand, I have started to see maroon and green spots starting to grow on the rock. I added a few snails, crabs, and 3 small frags. My question is, could this be coralline algae or something else? I was under the impression that it could take several months if not years to see this kind of growth in a tank.

You have to have a rock in your tank that has it on it to have it in your tank. There is no such thing as spontaneous generation - it has to come from live rock, or can be added to the tank in chips. More than likely you are seeing spots of algae and cyanobacteria. A picture is worth a thousand words!
Welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy your stay.

Could it have come in on the corals or backs of the hermit crabs?
Yup, hermit and snail shells can introduce it as well as any coral that had a spot of it.
Can you post a picture?

Wow that is amazing. I thought it would take much longer before I saw it actually growing on our rocks!

Yeah I had mine growing very well up till about 6 months ago it just stopped growing all together, after a good few maintence sessions I am starting to see it take off again, cleaned my glass and did a W/C say 5 days ago and I am already having coraline build up on the front glass again.. im pretty stoked.
