Some expert... your hippo tang will grow up fast. I know that was not your question but I have to bring it up... and no, I'm not part of the "tang police".

Corals depend on the light and water quality. I have Xenia, Green Star Polyps, Mushrooms, Zoos and a nice piece of Hammer Coral in my 30 gal. I bought the smallest frags I could find, put them where I wanted them and watched them grow. To supplement the water, I use Purple Up, Liquid Calcium, Iodine, Strontium & Molebdenum, Coral-Vite and Coral-Accel. All are from Kent Marine (except Purple Up).
You DON'T need a metal halide for these, but you do need at least Power-Compact lighting. I use 10.5 hrs of daylight.
This is what worked for me, take it for what it's worth. I have a friend that can't raise coral to save his life, and he trys similar supplements and light.
Hope this helps

cannot stress enough how much he will need a bigger tank in the next few weeks if he lasts that long without growing. But to your question.... candy canes might do well..... not too good with corals soooo.
