cost of a new lighting system

I'm now in the market for a new lighting system because i want to be able to take on any coral or clam in my 55 gallon tank. I currently have 4 40W NO bulbs. If i'm going to buy a new lighting system i'm going to get something that i won't have to upgrade again later. I am currently looking for a hood that will hold 2 MH bulbs and 2 VHO bulbs. I'm thinking of maybe getting 250W for the MH. I went to Premium Aquatics homepage and they have an option to create your own hood and it came out to $850 or so. Is this right? Is the system i'm trying to get really going to cost me an arm and a leg? Please give me some input on where i could go to purchase this unit cheaper. Or give me some alternatives if you can. Am i getting too much light for a 55 gallon tank? Thanks

WOW,That is a chunk of change. Could you maybe build your own?? Try looking at the classifieds on this site.Lots of stuff in the lighting section........STEVE

It is cheaper to retrofit an existing hood, but yes, it usually still costs tons of money. BUT, your corals will LOVE the greatly increased lighting.

I currently have 2 hoods. Both 48" and each holds 2 NO bulbs. Can i somehow retrofit these hoods to house MH and VHO's? cheaply?
Each hood is 48" long 5 1/4" wide and 4".
