Could it just been a Bad Fish?

Well It’s been close to 5 months now that I had my first 40g (FOLR) and the success of my tank has been pretty good expect for taping the water with salt water which cause high level of salt in my tank and my Tang and Dwarf Angel fish’s to die. Lucky my other fishes survive. That was about close to month ago so I decide to purchase a new fish Cardinal Banggani from my local fish store for the first time; I purchase the other fish’s from this site. He was doing well the first couple of hours but when I got home yesterday I found him stuck to the power head. I’m really confused about this.
Any Idea?
Of course here are my levels:
Ammonia: 0
PH: 8.1
Nitrite: 0
Nitrates: 20-40 using API Tester
Saltwater level: 1.021
My Fish's:
2 Clown fish's
1 lunare wrasse
1 firefish goby
1 royal gramma

How long have you had the Banggai?? A month or just a few hours?? Did it perish??
Healthy fish should not get sucked into any powerheads. Did you see this fish eat the the LFS?? How did you acclimate this fish?? How long?
Your levels look pretty good. You could maybe lower the nitrates a bit, but they are well within range for a FOWLR setup. The salinity is a bit low (but again, okay for a FOWLR), I like mine around 1.025-1.026.
When buying fish at a LFS always make sure you watch the fish eat. Most LFS do not offer any sort of live guarantee, so make sure that you are giving yourself the best chance to be successful ( I have never had a single LFS refuse to feed any fish I was interested in buying... If they did, I would run, not walk out of there!!!!!). . I have gone to the LFS with every intention to buy a fish, but after seeing their stock of whatever fish I am shopping all refuse to eat. I simply walk out without a new fish. It is not being a jerk.. its your money, don't spend it on a fish who would probably die in a day or two in your tank or the LFS tank.

I only had him for one day and no i didn't see him eat at the store. I try-ed to feed him at home but didn't eat, I didn't think much of it because I just got him.
Now about acclimate the store told me to acclimate it for about 15 minutes in the same bag which as been different instruction from this site when i bough there fish's.
Yeah i should ask to see them feed the fish. I just got him in rush it was on special but now see's like rip off...LOL..

Always drip acclimate (SWF.com suggests this). And ALWAYS ask to see the fish eat in the store. If it does not eat... Do not buy it!!
We all get caught up and excited buying a fish. You live and learn. No big deal. Lesson learned.

YES another lesson learned. So pretty much the fish died of not probably acclimate the fish huh...I guess that's what I get for taking advise from my local fish store... I just thought because I was buying the fish from somewhere else they had different instruction on their fish's...blows
I deftly got caught up in the excitement of buying a new fish... Thank You so much for advise.

My pleasure buddy...
I would say a combination of a non healthy fish and not acclimating it correctly was the reason the fish died. You could have acclimated it correctly and the fish very well may have still died. A fish that does not eat in the store is usually a goner.

Completely agree. Got it
. Thank You again.

Sweatervest, I think his nitrates are probably fine. The API test kits measure nitrate like 10 ppm high every time. If you don't acclimate a fish, it will not do well. Even doing a slow floating acclimation is better than nothing.

I will add you need to QT all new fish. Todays LFS move fish so fast that any disease fish will cause other tanks that are connected to it diseased as well. You want to keep your fish you already have health, adding a diseased will cause them to get sick. And if the LFS says there fish are healthy remember they also told you acclimate the fish for 15min. Remember LFS make money selling fish, if your fish dies and you go back a buy another they they made money off of you.

Yeah QT is something I been think of getting ever since I started following this forum but I'm almost done adding fish until I upgrade to a bigger tank.
LFS help me in the begging to start my tank and there advise have been pretty good. Until I finally bough a fish from there store. Like I mention all my other fish's i got were from this site and follow their instruction. Yeah that 15 minute acclimate instruction sounded wrong to me compare to saltwaterfish instruction but I just thought it was OK because it was from there store. boy I was wrong. Now knowing this I feel like I should say something to them but I'll just leave alone and never buy fish from them Again and take there advise.
Thanks for the advise. Well noted

Hek you could even buy from ***** if you new the things to look for and QT your purchase.
Thanks for the advise. Well noted we all learn somthing new ever day, even experts don't know everthing, they just know a lot.

Yeah you are absolutely right on that It only takes 1icky to wreck my tank and yeah Never is a harsh word (Never say Never right) I just need to smarter in getting to new fish.
It just gets me mad because I had just a good experience on my first couple of orders of fish's with no issue but then again I did follow the right acclimate instruction from this site not like to ones given from my LFS I sense something wrong when I was told about only 15 minutes acclimate. what a joke.
Lesson learn most likely wont be the last...

It most certainly won't be the last lesson learned. And that's good!!
Understand why we acclimate new fish and inverts. They come from a different environment than our tanks. The salinity and temp may be different. We want to slowly get them used to our tanks parameters. A good drip acclimation over time gets the fish used to the temp and salinity of our DT.
Nothing wrong with buying fish at the LFS. Just make sure they look healthy and eat in the store.

Also a tip when acclimating a new fish take samples of salinity and PH of the fishes bag water. Then while the 15min time floating bag for temp. adjustment bring the QT to match the bag water. This will give your new guy a fighting chance for survival. Good luck

I agree w the above statement. Iam amazed how low lfs keep there sg. I keep my tank at 1.022 most times when I check the bag its as low as 1.017. Temp is just part of the acclamation

Yep, most LFS do that save on money. Thats a lot of gallons and every 1.0000 = savings of money. One of the shops I go to never does water changes just adds to or tops off. They have so many fish going out with bags of water that he constantly add fresh sea water.

My LFS keeps their water at 1.021, and so do I, so there isn't a huge jump, only temperature.
