Couple ?'s on a 5 gallon

I have a couple question now that i am finally about ready to set up my 5 gal.
1. I have my lights, a 32watt smartlight retro, now I need a hood. I think I have a good design drawn up, kinda based it on a diagram I saw. Now I need to know what wood would be the best to use. Soemthing lite being that its on a 5 gal. but also something durable that will withstand that saltwater if it happens to get on it.
2. With those lights about 4'' on the top of my aquarium would I need a fan in the canopy and/or heater for the tank?
3. Some may remember my thread about my troublesome beach hermit. I was going to move him out of my 29 cause I got some more LR coming in. Do you think he would eat the pods of even mess with them.
Thanks everyone;

On my tank, I used Pine (it was chead) stained and used a poly on it for protection. I never had any rot, BUT, I did wipe it down every 2 months or so.
I always run a fan.. If nothing else, it keeps the humidity down inside the canopy
