Wow, definitely sounds like a better way to go than glass lids for numerous reasons. I certainly like knowing that more light will get through with the egg crate than the glass. Thanks!

What about having a canopy top with no cover? Would that work to let gas exchange happen but keep fish from jumping?

I forgot to mention I had the light directly on the glass tops, and when I changed to egg crate, I used the mounting brackets that lift it off about 3 inches.
