Covering the tank at night.

We live in a small apartment where the kitchen livingroom and dining are all one open space. We stay up much later than the lights in the tank stays on. My wife thinks im crazy because i constantly am trying to keep the area dark. I have finally put a cover over the tank ever night and take it off when its lights on time. The fish now know when i bring the cover out that the lights are going off and start to go to there sleeping spots. Was wondering if anyone else did this? If it is benefical or harmful?

sorry the back and most of the top isnt covered. im using a sheet definitly not choking my aquarium with a bbq cover

My tanks are in my living room/kitchen and we have the same issue. Fish aren't bothered by it. The 155 is only about 5 feet away from the TV (60") and they don't care. They'll adapt.

Same here. The tank is right next to where we hang out at night, and my computer sits 6 feet in front of it with two big LCDs casting a light right on the front of the tank. The fish don't care.

i guess im the only one out there practicing this technique with you, my tank is near the kitchen area, my tank doesnt see too much light after the tank shuts down for the night but if im having a get together or know that its going to be a long night i will also drape the front and sides of my tank to eliminate any light going through. In my mind im always trying to duplicate nature the best i can.

Any reason if you are constantly up later then the tank, why not just move the tank hours back? My 125gal lighting period used to be 5pm to 2am. Because that's when I was home (worked 10a-6p). I know a few tired nights after finals or what have you, I beat the fish to sleep

I covered my tanks a few times for parties, but that's because drunk idiots and tanks don't mix.

+1! nothing like finding random crap in your fish tank after a party.
At work we have a ten gallon with a blue legged hermit and a False perc clown that we cover just because the lights never shut off in the office. prevents excessive algee growth I think.

the only time i put a blanket on my tank is when adding a trigger or puffer just to take most of the aggression my others like to show to newbies. besides that i notice my fish just found spots that the rock give them anough shade to sleep
