I used to have a CPR 18" unit. Great for growing pods and getting them into your tank. very weak on nitrate control. I was happy with the product although it was a bit expensive for what you are getting out of it. I only stopped using it because I built a sump/refugium to get a larger refugium to help control nitrates.
Only negative thing about them is that air tends to build up slowly in the return and if you don't purge the air out every few weeks it may cause the refugium to overflow.

You may have more biolobical actions going on in the emperor than you realize. So removing it could be a problem. If you got, space you might consider a larger fuge hidden away someplace. You also could experiment with a diy fuge made from plexiglass from home depot. I made a large trickle type filter for about $5.00 worth of plexiglass and there was no charge at home depot for them to cut the pieces to my requests.
