Cracking glass drilling tanks

Anyone out there ever cracked a tank while drilling/dremeling it.
I'm about to drill my 110 and want to get a handle on my odds.:notsure:

I had a local glass co. drill 4 holes in my 54 and two additional holes in my 210...
So far 6 out of 6, with no cracks...
They charge $8-$12 a hole depending on size, and use a special drill press, Diamond bits and coolant...
I'll be taking my 125 there shortly to get it "re"setup...

I posted this question on another board and got many helpful hints, but nobody said they had cracked one or knew someone who had. I'm guessing that with care it is not a common occurence.

well i bought a used 55 at my local fish store and wanted them to drill it. I dont know what kind of tank it was but when they were drilling it, it shattered. they told me that they drill 10-20 tanks a week and they have never broke one before. Like i said i dont know what kind it is and they do a lot of them so it is possable. Any question e mail me. mcknz323@charter.net

Actually, it's usually only the Bottom (but not on all tanks) that is tempered...not the sides...
My 210 has a tempered bottom, but it came pre-drilled (RR) I just had a couple "extra" holes drilled for a closed loop system...
Same with the 54...bottom tempered, holes drilled in sides for closed loop and overflow box...
mcknz...were they drilling the bottom of your tank...?

That is correct...
They are drilled before they are tempered and assembled..

I drilled a 20 gallone on the sides. I used a dremmel tool. It took about 3 days 1hour per day to get it done though. I tried a glass shop around here but they said it couldn't be done....BS!

It can be done...just takes time and patience and make sure you don't overheat the glass!

Ok, back to your question. I recieved similar information about the bottom being the only tempered piece on the tank (mine was a 55) and attempted to drill the back. Didn't work. It's tempered. Whole thing caved in on me.
Just thought I'd let you know my experience before you end up with a 3 - sided tank like me.

JB...Did your tank shatter into a bizzilion pieces or just crack and break into a few dissapointment filled chunks...?
