Crazy Myth's Lets hear them

That glass absorbs chemicals from window cleaners like Windex, and if it has ever been cleaned with Windex (on the outside) that the tank must be replaced.
I was told this by a guy in the LFS. I told him that if it were even remotely true, than the spaghetti my kid had smeared all over the outside of the tank, than my fish, and the fish of all who ever had kids, were doomed.

With out question the biggest myth on swf is that I may know what I am talking about.

People, do NOT
fall for this one

Just kidding Joe... maybe

One of the biggest myths is that ich comes from stress. No, it does not. Stress makes fish more susceptible to parasitic infection but it does not cause it. Ich must be introduced for a fish to get it.

Hahaha. That reminds me of this picture for some reason.

I will, from this day forward, never complain about my little grandson Andrew... AKA the fish tank terrorist ever again. I will always remember that picture, and be able to say, he is normal.
Other children are just like him, he is not alone. OMG!!!

It is okay, if you have no morals and enjoy torturing animals.
But lets not start that again lol
Myth:
Protein skimmers do a great job of oxygenating the water.

They actually do. People should also understand that they need power heads to distribute that oxygen rich water throughout the tank. Salt water is very dense. The oxygen rich water will just go back to the top. Power heads are needed to push that water to other areas of the tank.

I drink RO/DI water all the time. Have been for 2 years... IMO, we get far more nutrients than we need anyway with all the sodium and vitamins in our diets. Drinking DI water doesn't make a difference.
Some more myths:
  • Crushed Coral is a nitrate factory. It will cut a fish's fins. Bristle worms can't live in it and you can make it as deep as you do your sand bed and there won't be any problems... Actually you should only have it 1 inch or less and you should have a substantial cleanup crew.
  • To cycle your tank you should just buy a small damsel and put it in the new tank. Everything will be fine.
  • The more live rock the better (after all fish don't need room to swim).
  • Wet/Dry or trickle filters are nitrate factories. Don't even bother cleaning them.
  • You can't overskim a tank...
  • Already said, but you can never have too much flow or lighting.
  • It's ok to just use amquel or any other decholrinator to treat tap water before you add it to your tank.
  • You should dose everything the fish store sells... Test kits are expensive and unnecessary. All you need to do is add what the bottle says and don't worry about testing for it. You can never have too much calcium...
  • Sand from the beach is ok to put in your tank. It's natural isn't it?
UV sterilizers can just be hooked up inline with your main system pump. They don't need their own separate loop or flow controllers.
Tangs don't need a constant supply of food. You can just feed them flake food whenever you feed your other fish.
Garlic extract helps a fish's immune system (even though the substance in garlic that does actually help, breaks down almost instantly when it's exposed to oxygen)
    Hydrometers are ok
The more water changes the better
A good way to get rid of hair algae is to brush it off inside the tank (which only spreads it).
    Vodka/sugar dosing will remove nitrates
There exists somewhere in the universe, some/any kind of filter system or method that will replace good tank maintenance.

Garlic WILL help a fish with parasites. Ever heard of using garlic to ward off blood sucking vampires? Well it works the same way for fish. For example, if I eat a lot of garlic or even garlic chicken before camping, I tend to get a loss less mosquito bites. Seriously. Garlic will help reduce external parasites.

Yes... but it will not help a fish's immune system. I never said anything about parasites.

Garlic has not yet been proved to help with any parasite related illness. Garlic is reported to stimulate the fish to eat. The correlation between garlic and the reduction in parasites is that the fish eats more, resulting in a healthier immune system. A healthy fish eats well and will be able to fight off parasites more. Garlic cannot remove ich from your system and will not kill ich. It may help the fish fight it off though. Ich will continue to plague the fish in the system.

That's all I use it for. There might be some benefits to garlic on the immune system but it only works for fresh garlic cloves. Once the juice is extracted, oxygen quickly breaks it down into nothing more than a garlic flavoring... This includes Garlic Xtreme (which I use frequently).

That is completely correct. Garlic extract has no nutritional benefit at all. The garlic must be fresh to have any effect on the immune system.
