Crazy News Story (Lionfish Attack)

A little overly dramatic, isn't it? Unless there is something that is not mentioned like the guy is allergic to the venom or the fish was really a stonefish, in general lionfish stings are hardly fatal. I would feel more sympathy if we were talking about a blue ring octopus or stonefish but not a lionfish! One word comes to mind... wimp.

Really? I have no clue when it comes to aggressive fish. So you would pretty much have to be allergic to have seizures like he did after being stung? Do many people get stung by their Lions?

I'd think if the guy had a Stonefish or Blue Ring in his tank he was so stupid he deserved whatever was coming to him...
I've heard Lionfish envenomations are painful, and should be taken seriously, but are usually not fatal. Of course, as with all venom, individuals react differently.

That guy must have been doing something REALLY annoying or REALLY stupid to warrant that kind of agression from a lionfish. I'd be willing to bet he wasn't paying attention to what he was doing, but that doesn't make as good a news story. I know quite a few people who have been stung by lionfish, some of them more than once. It's painful, but not deadly to most people. Same as bees, wasps, spiders, etc.

lionfish don't always sting when provoked. Joe's uncle was in the saltwater business for 25 years. He was cleaning one of their display tanks and the lionfish just brushed him. It was swolen for about 6 months, and his hand is still in constant pain... definately needs to be taken seriously. Now this was a full grown volitan too... a dwarf sting isn't nearly as bad.

well it said he got stung by 6 of the spines so maybe he just got alot of venom. what I have read thier are no confirmed deaths from lion fish but now since I post this I bet some one well find something to disprove that. The serious ness of the reaction depends also on how big you are whether or not you have a full stomach and age. Im 5'7 and weigh around 140lbs I know a lionfish would react alot worse to me than say a 6'4 guy who weighs 250lbs. but I also have a real good motabolism so I might do beter than some thier are so many aspects that need to be taken into consideration. with enough venom I would think any one could die from it.

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.
It's junk like that, that gives these fish and others like them, a bad name.
Seizures and convulsions??...8 paramedics to hold him down??.....yeah, maybe if he was EXTREMELY allergic, I mean SERIOUSLY allergic. I've seen people go into full blown epileptic seizures and it didnt take 8 people to hold them down.
Most scientists say that if you're allergic to bee stings, there's a good chance you're allergic to Lionfish stings. I'm actually so allergic to wasp stings, that my throat will swell up and I could die of suffocation.
I've been stung by everything from a 2" Fuzzy to my 15" Volitan and have NEVER had anything more than swelling, redness, medium to intense pain and numbness.
It's good that the guy sold that Lion, because he's a moron.

i bet $100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 (ok you get the point)that dude is allergic to bees. i read that lionfish stings are about the same as be stings. he should do some reaserch before buying that fish. i even found a fish book in my library that has lionfish in it and says what you should do to when stung.

Not to completly change the subject from the article and the lionfish sting - but did anyone notice the size of the tank? that tank seems very small for the fish that he was in it
maybe a 55?

lionfish don't need a big tank as they don't swim around that much... they normally just sit in one spot to wait for food to pass them...

There was also a Yellow Tang and a Naso as well as a Damsel in the tank - that is why I said the tank is to small

Quick man...to the 'Tang Police' car... find out who is no longer posting on the board and bust em!!!
maybe the guy was trying to pet his fish and got hit... unless the lion was very hungry and expected to be fed, I couldnt see the fish "attacking"...
