Crazy Starfish or Me!!

Help, I recently purchased a starfish and it won't come out of one of my LR. What I want to do is get it out and take it back. I thought he was supposed to stay visible on the LS bed and go around the tank and eat the waste of the others. It's a 55 gal FOWLR&S. What can I do to get him to come out of the rock? I also have 3 damsels (they're getting sooo big)and a coral beauty and yellow tang. Does this have anything to do with why he is always, and I do mean always hiding?
Any suggestions/helpful hints would be appreciated.

You can try leaving the lights off at night and looking to see if he comes out then, that is when they come out and do their work. hope this helps Good Luck

What kind of starfish is it?

they are right, I have a blue star and mine only comes out at night, about 1/2 hr. to 1 hr. after you turn the lights out. and there he is! crawls across the sand bed. I think he is cool, even though you dont see them during the day. I always loved star fish.
they are good sand sifters but you also need hermits and they also say cucumbers are good.
