...I have been working on a couple of things. Taking actinic shots and shooting/processing raw files. The pic below is an example of both. I would appreciate any comments on the pic quality...positive and/or negative...

Well I guess I'd like to see the same pic under normal conditions as well. Perhaps you could also tell us what we are looking at.
Personally I like the shot that you posted, shows great color and depth.
Then again I know you have a Canon G-5 and so do I. I just want to know why yours seems to take better pics than mine does. Perhaps you should just stop posting pics as I get so jealous every time you do.

NM I look at your pics all the time and I have to say....WOW. I have a G2 a SD550 and I can't take pics like you to save my life. I am starting to think that you have your tank located in a nuclear reactor.

Color is nice. Too many dark areas though. You could use better light.
I would use External light source as well as the tank lights.
Wanna know a "cheap trick" in making a diffuser light?
Take a 5 gallon bucket and cut it in about half (where it is about 12" tall).
mount a socket in it with about a 30 watt 5000k compact flourescent. Cover it with a piece of white material (sheet works fine).
Now you have a nice diffuser light for still photography.
2 of them is even better.
You can be creative in making a stand for them. I hang them on a step ladder using coat hangers when I need to. Though, most of the time it's "Wife, come here and hold this while I shoot photo's!"

Sorry...but I've been busy all day and couldn't get back. Thanks for the responses....before I address each individual response here is a shot of the same area...
...and a brief explanation in regard to the first pic I posted. I have been playing with processing photos from raw mode...using PS Elements 3.0...the first pic was shot in auto mode...macro...no flash...under actinics only in raw mode. I then tried to adjust in PS Elements in the origional raw format to attempt a capture of what my eye sees under the actinics. To me...the essence of photography is to capture what the eye sees as realisticly as possible. Shooting under actinics it is extremely difficult to produce a photo of what the eye actually sees...and the first photo I posted is about as close as I've ever been able to get with this camera under those conditions...and it was slightly adjusted with my editing software to achieve the appearence of a capture of what my eye sees.
When shooting under normal lighting photos that reflect what my eye actually sees is much easier...like this photo...

I believe you may be on to something there...when I shoot in raw format again I will experiment with various shutter speeds and see if that helps. Good observation. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

A pic under the 2x110 actinics and 2x400 MH's is postd above for you to compare. It is a look at my thriving frilly mushroom garden that includes a small colony of very nicely colored purpleish 'shrooms. It sits mid reef on the far left side of my display.
I also like the color/depth of the actinic shot...actually it is very close to what my eye sees...and as I mentioned that is what I "try" to capture. Some times under some conditions it can be very difficult to acvhieve.
The Canon G5 can produce some outstanding photos...all it takes is patience...practice...and a willingness to work with the settings/editing to achieve actual reproductions of what the eye sees. I agree it can be very frustrating at times. That is in part why I made the post to begin this thread. I am trying to improve the quality of my shots.

Thanks for the kind words...but it sits here in the house and isn't all that special.

Actually the whole point of the attempted photo was to reproduce what my eye sees under only actinic lighting. I agree the lighting is harsh...that is what makes getting a decent pic so difficult. External lighting or using a flash would have provided a much different photo...and would not have been a representation of what my eye saw under the conditions.
Nice tip on the lighting fixtures...something like that may come in handy for shooting portraits of family gatherings...I'll need to remember that.
