Potential stocking list for a 120g (48x24x24) reef tank. FOWLR at first.
Powder Blue Tang
Powder Brown Tang
Mandarin Goby
Dragon Wrasse
Clown Trigger
Blue Hippo tang
What do you all think of this list?

all the tangs you picked are ick magnets, but that doesnt mean they're impossible to keep.
mandarin needs a well established tank so dont plan on adding him for 8 months to a year unless you have a real diverse/well stocked fuge.

I think the Clown Trigger may be a problem in a reef setting. I have heard horror stories with those fish once they hit sexual maturity.

the clown trigger absolutely will not work long term, for aggression, size, and reef-safe issues.
3 tangs, imo, is too much for that size of a tank. i would pick one. you could then add a dwarf angel or two instead.

I have a Kole tang/Yellow tang/Sailfin tang all in my 125 reef.
They've been together now for a few years, so they're pretty well accustomed to eachother. - So keeping that many tangs isn't impossible....Just some tangs can become VERY aggressive and cut up the other fish if they're over crowded.
Its a chance. - If you are going to buy 3 tangs, buy them small, and at the same time. imo.

I'm guessing that since you have a 125 that it's 72" long, in which case three tangs is fine, but three in a 48" long tank is pushing it. They'll just run into each other.

I see myself having to buy a 300+ gallon tank. LOL
How about this:
Hippo
Powder Brown
Mandarin Goby
Dragon Wrasse
a couple of clowns
A couple of sand sifters.

id pick one tang or the other. theres plenty of other fish out there to choose from.
think of it this way. both of those fish are prone to ick. if you get lucky and 1 of them is really healthy/ doesnt have ick or get it when introduced, theres a good chance the other one could bring it in and get the healthy one sick.

But I really like Tangs.

There is a 180g tank for sale that I might take a look at, so the plans might change anyway. The 180 is 2 feet longer than my tank, same width, same height.
One more dumb question. Does the 1 inch per gallon rule typically apply to reef tanks, or something close to that rule? It seems like people keep a lot less than that.

everybody really likes tangs. i personally like them without ich.
the inch per gallon rule doesnt apply to any tank really. just a matter of the fish's maximum size and compatability with other fish/corals/ inverts. also take into account their diet and if you'll be able to supply what they require.

you can not keep two mandarin gobies together. Bet you didn't think just making up your wish list was going to be such a task did you? lol
We've all gone thru it

In my 125 I have a yellow tang, six line wrasse, flame angel, gold striped maroon clown, 3 blue/green chromis, 2 firefish, and scooter blenny. I have plenty of color contrasts and always lots of movement going on. All are reef safe and do not bother any of my corals. the only one on that list that is questionably "reef safe" is the angel - once in a while you hear about someone getting an aggressive one that nips corals.

I was wondering why I never saw anyone on here who had more than one Mandarin - they are so beautiful and not too expensive. None of the profiles I read said anything about that, so thanks!!!!
What is everyone's take on the Dragon Wrasse? I was told he was reef safe and didn't bother other fish, but drs. foster and smith says not reef safe and aggressive.

I don't mind picking another wrasse, but I met this one in person and was intrigued!

dragon wrasse don't bother corals but it will eat shrimp when you need to add inverts. try anthias the most colorful fish you could have if you keep them in group .
mandarin you can keep 2 but you tank its not big enough to support 2. they need a lot of pods. they might fight because of food. imo good luck

Thanks! The Mandarin is beautiful, so I don't mind having to limit myself to one.
The Dragon is definitely not the most showy fish out there, but they are so darn interesting to watch! And they are so unique looking at every stage of growth. Really cool fish, in my very limited experience!

The wrasse will most likely just go after shrimp/crabs things like that. The only issue I could see is that they can get rather large like around a foot in length so im sure there will be some tank dominance issues(i.e. its his tank) Its also carniverious so when it gets older you may have to pay extra attention to water perameters since it will most likely eat a lot! But if you aren't worried about having shrimp, I think it could be an awsome fish to center a tank around

Thanks. I think I am going to go with Splendid Leopard Wrasse instead. I will go for the Dragon if I get a bigger tank.
