Cured Live Rock

I received my CURED live rock yesterday & added it to my tank. I currently have in my tank 2 perculas, 1 starfish, shrimp & cleaner crabs. Should I have done anything to the cured rock before putting it in my tank?

If you "received" your live rock in the mail, then it is not cured. You need to take it out of the tank immediately, as well as do a big water change.

It was delivered from the dist to my LFS. It was delivered same day & wrapped in newspaper. Do I need to do anything?

yes you need to cycle the rock, it is not cured...if it came in newspaper, it is definitely not cured...get a rubbermaid container, or use a spare tank. first take some super salty water and shake the rocks in a tub with that super saltwater, and then place the rock in a rubbermaid, with correct saline levels, with a powerhead and some sort of light so you can see if any critters come out, etc, doubtfully though if the rock came wrapped in newspaper. you will need to sit it in that tank to cure for about 3-4 weeks, basically just like cycling a tank...

bunny you may choose to listen to them or listen to advice from this board. yes it needs to be removed asap!! and do a big water change....30%+ you have now introduced loads of dead organisms from transport, and detritus. this is going to create an ammonia/nitrate spike.. here is a thread all dedicated to actual meaning of cured/curing LR

Yes. It will kill everything in your tank from the high amounts of ammonia produced from the rotting die off.
Don't listen to that lfs anymore.

Eek, scary. I remember when i put rock in mine for the 1st time. It made a huge nitrite spike and killed my fish... Best to put rock in 1st before fish.
Hopefully you got it out quick enough. Should be ok with a waterchange.

I guess it cant be taken out of water... Otherwise all the 'live' stuff will die straight away.
Being wrapped in newspaper.... Not good.
But i dont know too much about it.

when you say distributors tank........ wait did you read that thread i input on my post???
ok when you say distributors tank.. was it shipped? if it was unless it was submersed in water completely when shipped and had been in their tanks for over 2-3 weeks, maybe its cured, but regardless never add rock directly, always shake it off in saltwater before adding it even if it is cured.. I dont know why you are asking these questions, all of the info is in that thread...did you read it?

yeah I did read it, but the rock was shipped submerged in water. I was wrong---I did a little more investigating. I wasn't therre when the rock was put in the water, but my mother was & she said it came packaged in water? So if it was live, what should it look like? Be patient w/ me----This is all new to me :notsure:

it can look like rock, cured and uncured rock doesnt have different looks to it per se. i mean yes well established rock can have nice coraline growing on it, but that doesnt mean its cured. and the rock wasnt fully submerged was it? probably a tiny bit of water, and wrapped in newspaper is my guess right? basically get your test kit handy, place the rock in a container with brand new saltwater, a powerhead, and a heater. make sure all toxin levels read zero before placing the rock in the container, then test the water the next day or couple of days, i bet you have nitrate/ammonia/and possibly nitrite readings, if so the rock is not cured. another way that helps is if the rock smells foul, you know its not cured because of die off...
I still wouldnt place any rock in a tank unless you know for sure its cured. by this i mean you bought the same exact rock you saw two weeks ago at your LFS. so if you think its cured, and smells like the ocean in a good way, id probably put it in a container for about 30 mins with a powerhead and a heater. test the water after that 20 minutes, and shake the heck out of each rock underwater, to ensure all dirt, and any dead organisms can fall off...

What kind of test kits are you using? Red sea test kits can be way off, so even if it's saying it's not spiking, it may be. I'd agree with everyone else. This may be why you said your clownfish aren't looking so good.
