Place the rock into a seperate container filled with saltwater for a week or so and test for ammonia to be absolutely certain that it is fully cured first.

You can, as long as you are positive, I mean really positive, that it is fully cured and has remained healthy on the way to your tank. I do this with rock from my lfs when they have a particularly nice piece. I verify that they have cured it, and I bring it home in my own bucket with tank water in it so that ther eis absolutely no die-off during transport. That may be a little excessive, since I live 10 minutes from my lfs, but better safe than...

Just be ABSOLUTELY certain it is fully cured. Again if it is at all questionable place it into a seperate container. I would never risk my system based on what my best friend said let alone an lfs.

Welcome to the boards.
Rock is considered "cured" when it is placed in water and no longer is suffering die off (which produces ammonia).
If rock sits for any length of time out of water (or in other unfavorable conditions) then life on it begins to die. Basically, becoming "uncured".
