cured rock in new tank

if I happen to find some good live rock that has a few soft corals and polyps on it, and put it in a new tank that is cycling, would all of the corals and other life mostly die off? If I couldn't put it in at first, is there any way I could keep the rock alive until after the cycle? If I did regular water changes to keep the levels low, is there a chance the life could live through the cycle?

Actually you would be hurting yourself by trying.
You do not want to do "water changes" and such during a cycle.
If you find a live rock as you described and want it, ask them to hold it for awhile until your cycle is done, ;)

but I thought that live rock would actually get the cycle going? should I put any rock in at all during cycle? some base rock maybe for bacteria to attach? Also... what about live sand? seems I could get a good deal on both of them.. not sure if they can hold. Will check...

Sorry to confuse you. I was thinking of the corals more than the rock.
Are you cycling a tank now? if so how?

no, but I will be soon.. probably be a couple more weeks before I do. Well, actually, it will probably be after swf.com opens back up so I can buy some dang sand from them! we'll see...
thanks
