Interesting question... I was thinking about this earlier when reading about Obama's plan to start removing troops in 2012. It appears that Obama's main concern was to get Osama, even moreso than to put an end to Al Queda.
I also wonder if the backlash from Pakistan over the Osama mission may have something to do with this departure.
Anyway, it seems that I haven't answered your question... go suck an egg!
What was the question again?

I agree with Crimzy about this being an interesting question.
I'm afraid I can't see any real accomplishments since the initial purge of the taliban and the Karzai election.
I believe in the Powell Doctrine, not in nation building.

After hearing the recent comments from the Afghani president I would have pull all our troops out now. My kid just got back a couple months ago and even though he is sorta in the rear with the gear he saw enough to know it's still really messed up. This is a political move by 0bama. He chose the absolute minimum the commanders would recommend which is going to make it more dangerous for the troops still there. Do it right or get the hell out now.

We have destabilized the Taliban but when we leave, they will take over again. So we've given ourselves a 10 year reprieve before doing it all over again. I figure we'll keep a Navy task force there and bomb targets to keep the terrorists weak, but not be successful in installing/maintaining a stable government. These Islamists aren't going away. They still want to reestablish the Caliphate and conquer the world. We are going to be like Israel and be in perpetual war until the oil dries up or the Middle East is nuked. That is the quandary with wars there; unless we stay there permanently to baby-sit, the crazies are always going to slither back and cause problems.
