current satellite question

ok, I'm new to salt water aquariums, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.
I recently bought a current satellite light, and the instructions said to put it over an aquarium with a glass top. I have the light on the legs that came with it, so it is about 4 inches above the water. I was under the impression that I could remove my glass top. I have a 30 gal tank.
The light, as you probably know, has a plastic cover that protects the bulb.
So, can I have my tank without the glass top? I would rather do it that way.
Thanks,
Mark

I have a pc fixture from them and have removed my tops as well. The difference in light penetraton is noticeable. Every so often, simply clean to plastic shield from the inevitable build up.
