I am setting up asalttank and was told that I could use a spotted grouper instead of damsels. What is everyones opinion about this? The store said that it will shorten my cycle time due to the fact that the fish is much larger. Lets hear your opinions. Thanx.

I agree with SUNDOG. How much does a spotted grouper cost? Are you willing to take a chance on killing a large beautiful fish like that. Green Chromis,or Damsels are a lot less of an investment, about five dollars each,to loose. Alot of times(not always) the ammonia, and nitrite levals reach toxic levals during the cycle, and your fish will die.Patience is the key here.If you really want a grouper, please wait, for the fishes sake, till the tank is cycled. I once read someone say" in salt water BAD things happen quickly, GOOD things take time" STEVE

Well my tank is 125 gallons. I do not intend to keep the grouper. My lfs guy said that he has used this particular fish to cycle several customers (about 10) tanks and that they are very hardy fish. I have had a 55 gallon salt tank and am quite aware that patience is the key, however like he said the grouper is much better to look at then the damsels. I am in no hurry, just trying to pick through what I hear and pick up new things as you never stop learning about salt tanks. well thanx for your input and keep it coming. Craig

Well thanx for the info. No need to apologize as I may have had a tank before but can never stop learning. I am sure I will ask a few stupid questions.

Well thanks guys. I will keep you posted as to the progress of my tank (when it arrives). It should be here in about another week or two. Just to let you know, it is a 125 gallon flat back hexagon tank w/ under tank wet/dry, venturi protein skimmer. Have not decided on lighting yet. I am thinking of going with one actinic and one 50/50. What is your opinion on this?
