Cycling question?

When cycling, would putting saltwater from my old established tank, and saltwater from the LFS speed up the process because they already have the bacteria I need in it? Just wondering.

Do you have any live rock in the new tank? I started my tank with just live rock and it cycled in about 2 weeks. The more live rock the better.

I have to ditto the live rock comment! I'm 12 days into my cycle.....my ammonia is at 0, my nitrites have peaked and on the way down and my nitrates are beginning to increase. Also...I've had some interesting hitchhikers from the rock. I only have 50 lbs in a 72 gal tank. It's expensive but absolutly a great bargin considering what it will add to the quality of your water and its biological filtration process!

yes it would speed up the process. if you filled the tank half way with the old tank water or more you would be fully cycled.

I would have to agree. Thats what I did on my 55. LS,LR and some water from an established tank will definately be beneficial and quicker.

Adding established water will help but actually more bacteria reside in your sand bed/crushed coral. Adding established sand to your new tank or established crushed coral in your filter will help more in speeding up the process.

"Fully cycled"? do you mean cycle faster, or it would audomatically be fully cycled?
By the way, I havn't started the cycle yet, my stand should be finished by tommorow and I will be putting all the LR, sand, and water in it tommorow.

say you filled the tank up to 3/4 full that is cycled already, i'd say your pretty damn cycled. of course you should keep ls and lr in a tank as well that is also mature.

If this is true, why do ppl wait 4-6 weeks for their cycle? Why don't they just use water from the LFS or something? Anyone else want to comment on this, because I would like my cycle to be done quickly, but I don't want to be careless and make a mistake?

To many bad things can go wrong by using someone else's water. You really have to trust them and ensure that they know what they are talking about. Their parameters could be WAY off and you could be totally screwed.
There is NOTHING fast nd easy in this hobby. I will give you this advice though. If you do get water from a RELIABLE source, staill add live stock VERY SLOWLY. It would not take much to kick the tank back into a cycle IMO. HTH ,Barry

It takes about ten hours, give or take, for the bacteria that cycles your tank to double in size. Adding substrate and filter media from an established tank will only add bacteria that is actually in that substrate and or filter media, it will not however speed up the bacterias ability to probagate which is what the waiting is all about.
Short answer is it will speed it up a tad but not much; maybe a day or two at best.
